How To Overcome The Fear Of Flying

While I do not have any specific advice for dealing with fear of flying or how to overcome it, I can confirm that I was terrified of flying for over 30 years. It is not clear when it started to become a problem. I didn’t fear my first few flights. Then I suddenly became afraid. But, I was happy to find that I didn’t feel afraid any more. Don’t believe that fear lasts forever. Maybe mine disintegrated and yours might too.

Ironically, my little brother took care of me in a small propeller-plane. He was very thorough and explained everything. I also got to hear him speak to the tower about what the various things meant. Knowing all this stuff made me feel calmer when I flew again. (And I would suffer panic attacks on long flights. We’ll be watching what happens to my next long-haul flight ….. (I am not the most nervous flyer but this incident was very frightening. And my fears are usually not triggered until the plane touches the ground. Once I was home, I told my husband the story and then I checked out the side effects. Famotidine was a medication I hadn’t taken in a while. Anxiety, nervousness and racing heartbeat are some of the side effects. Moral of this story: Never, EVER take a new medication before taking off.

It’s quite surprising to see the difference between what people fear (abductions by strangers) and what actually is happening (family turmoil and custody disputes). The American family’s nature and the wider sense of community have changed significantly since 1970. Divorce, single-parent families more common, and more mothers working have all contributed to the loss of some of the community’s cohesion. Trust in general is likely to have fallen, and parents are trying to exert more control over their children.

Drinking is another option. The earphones can’t drown out screaming babies who sometimes love to listen to surround sound. Matt, thanks for sharing. It allowed me to look at my fears and live through them. This is a great post!

You can get help with your fear of flying by visiting a local health food shop and a pharmacy that sells complementary therapies. Locate the Bach Flower Remedy shelf and get one each Mimulus and Rescue Remedy. You can also spray Rescue Remedy if you have it.

Start taking the Mimulus up to one month prior to your flight. Start immediately if you are flying in short notice. Three drops on your tongue, or in a glass/bottle with water. Take three sips every day.

If you are feeling anxious about the idea or flight, you can use Rescue Remedy to calm your nerves. This can happen at any time of the day.

The Rescue Remedy should be taken three days before you fly. Any anxiety or nervousness you have on the day, you can use the Rescue Remedy. It’s likely that it won’t take too much.

The brain can get very disoriented. It can lead to excessive anger and shutting down. These are often the results of a brain that is wired to fear and feel danger. Claustrophobia panic attack strikes those who love to travel. Heights are not a problem. I actually enjoy the feeling of being in the air. Landing is, however, more dangerous. I hate the thought of being trapped in a plane for long periods of time. It drives me insane. Jetblue passengers were held captive for hours without being able to take off in one of the many incidents. If the aircraft cannot depart within two hours, the legislation allows it to return to dock. I’ll be done in 30 minutes. I expect to flip the switch in about 2 hours. My wife tries not to make me forget my Xanax, but I do take it whenever I fly. She can tell when I’m in trouble and she knows what to do. Want to go to China, Japan and Australia. However, it is unlikely that I will enjoy flights lasting more than 5-6 hours. My electronics are a great help. Thank you for sharing.

You feel fearful of the things you are feeling when you’re traumatized. These body-based strategies can help you be present to what’s going on inside of your body. You learn to embrace your experience.

Falling from a high place, especially if it is enclosed, is almost impossible. Fear of being high can result. We may be afraid that an airliner will crash. You may also feel disconnected from the Earth. Fear can be caused by our inability to control our emotions. We may feel afraid when we are unable to use our basic control mechanisms, which include using our feet to reach what interests us and turn away from what scares us.
